GP-DISP: A General Purpose Dynamic Instruction Set Processor

This research presents a reconfigurable processor design that seeks to obtain optimal performance for common computationally intensive tasks and yet retains general-purpose functionality. This evolutionary approach utilizing both hardware and software focuses on a system called GP-DISP that provides an adaptive hardware approach to reap the gains previously found in special-purpose processors, but with the general-purpose programmability found in common processors. GP-DISP represents a single-chip design that leverages heavily from previously developed techniques in the areas of field programmable gate arrays, dynamically scheduled processors, programmable functional units, and write-able control stores.
